Sea lions belong to a group of animals known as ‘pinnipeds’, which means ‘wing-footed’. It is these ‘wings’ or fl ippers and their sleek bodies that make them such strong swimmers and divers. They are preyed upon by sharks and killer whales. In some areas, these intelligent marine mammals are culled to protect fish stocks as they are seen to compete with the fishing industry.
