Book now about this

The lowland paca, also known as the spotted paca, is a remarkable nocturnal rodent native to the tropical forests and wetlands of the Americas, where it is most often found near rivers and water sources. As the second-largest rodent species in the world after the capybara, the paca plays an important role in its natural ecosystem. Feeding mainly on fallen fruit, nuts, seeds and tubers, these shy animals can grow up to 77cm in length and weigh as much as 15kg.

Eddie O’Brien, Team Leader at Dublin Zoo said; “Lowland pacas are fascinating creatures and we are over the moon to welcome Tony to the Rainforest House habitat. Pacas are close relatives of the capybara – often described as a smaller, spotted version of the world’s largest rodent – so we think visitors are really going to fall in love with him. He’s settling in really well so far in his habitat alongside the sloths. While pacas are surprisingly speedy, particularly in comparison to the leisurely sloths, these two species are really well suited to co-habitation.
