Call Of The Wild

Trade in your old smartphone. Make a wild difference.

Answer the Call of the Wild:
Give your old smartphone a second life

Did you know that millions of unused smartphones could be sitting in drawers across Ireland?

Your old technology could have a new purpose. By trading in your unused smartphone or other eligible electronic device through Dublin Zoo’s Call of the Wild campaign, you can give it a second life while helping to support gorilla conservation.

In partnership with Buyaphone.ie, we’re encouraging people across Ireland to make more sustainable choices with their technology and support efforts to protect gorillas and their natural habitats.

How it works

Give your smartphone a second life

Trading in your old smartphone can help extend its useful life through reuse, repair or refurbishment, supporting a circular economy and helping to reduce electronic waste.

Get paid

Trade in your eligible smartphone or other electronic device through Buyaphone.ie’s service via our campaign widget below and receive the full agreed trade-in value directly by bank transfer or Revolut.

Support gorilla conservation

For every qualifying completed and paid trade-in made through the Dublin Zoo campaign widget, Buyaphone.ie will make a proportional financial contribution towards Dublin Zoo’s conservation efforts, based on the value of the device, at no additional cost to you.

These contributions will help support Dublin Zoo’s gorilla conservation work, including efforts to protect gorillas and their natural habitats.

Want to make an even bigger difference?

You can also choose to donate 100% of your agreed trade-in proceeds directly to Dublin Zoo instead of receiving the payment yourself. This is entirely optional.

By giving your old smartphone or other eligible device a second life, you’re supporting more responsible use of technology while helping to make a difference for wildlife.

MINING AND GREAT APES

What’s in your smartphone?

Smartphones contain valuable metals like gold, cobalt, and tantalum, which is extracted from coltan. While essential for everyday tech, mining these materials carries a heavy environmental cost.

Where do these minerals come from?

Mining smartphone minerals in Central Africa can contribute to habitat loss, pollution, and human pressure on critical populations of gorillas, chimpanzees, and bonobos.

Great apes under threat

A 2024 Science Advances study found that mining threatens nearly 180,000 African great apes (over one-third of the population) as mining projects increasingly overlap with gorilla, chimpanzee, and bonobo habitats.

A critical habitat

The Congo Basin contains some of the world’s most important tropical rainforests and provides vital habitat for western lowland gorillas and other threatened wildlife.  Protecting these forests is essential for biodiversity and the long-term survival of great apes.

Valuable resources in our old smartphones

Millions of unused smartphones sit forgotten in homes across Europe, full of valuable materials. Extending their life through reuse or recycling cuts waste and conserves critical resources.

Our mission

Dublin Zoo’s Call of the Wild raises awareness about the impact our technology has on natural habitats. When you trade in your unused smartphone with Buyaphone.ie, you help keep resources in use while funding vital conservation efforts based on your device’s trade-in value.
