Dublin Zoo and L’Oceanogràfic Valencia are collaborating on a research project that uses wearable sensors to learn more about animal behaviour and welfare.
The sensors (worn as collars or bracelets by our animals) record animal movements throughout the day and night. By combining this information with observations from our animal care team, we can better understand how animals use their habitat, respond to enrichment, and spend their time.
This knowledge helps us make informed decisions that support the health and wellbeing of the animals in our care.
Every movement tells a story – and every animal is helping us learn.

Have you spotted my sensor bracelet?
Our elephants wear these specially designed sensor bracelets that help us learn more about their daily behaviour and activity patterns.
The bracelet contains a small movement sensor that records how the elephant moves throughout the day. This information is combined with observations made by our animal care team to help us better understand how elephants spend their time, use their habitat, and respond to enrichment activities.
The knowledge we gain helps us make informed decisions that support elephant health, wellbeing, and welfare.
