Golden lion tamarin

Tamairín leonta órga

  • Scientific name: Leontopithecus rosalia
  • IUCN status: Endangered
  • Habitat: Brazil – tropical rainforests
  • Diet: Omnivore – fruits, insects, small vertebrates and lizards.

These tiny, striking monkeys are part of an international breeding programme. Dublin Zoo
also helps to fund researchers studying these primates in Brazil. Tamarins almost became extinct in the wild due to hunting and loss of habitat to ranches and housing development. Dublin Zoo is now involved in supporting the restoration of some of this habitat and releasing tamarins back into the wild.
