Bat (Rodrigues fruit)

IaltoĢg meas Rodrigues

  • Scientific name: Pteropus rodricensis
  • IUCN status: Critically endangered
  • Habitat: Indian Ocean island of Rodrigues – rainforest
  • Diet: Frugivore – fruits, eucalyptus, flowers

Due to clearing of their rainforest habitat and cyclones, Rodrigues fruit bats (also know as ‘flying fox’ bats) almost became extinct in the 1970s with less than 100 recorded on the small island of Rodrigues. But, by working together and forming breeding sanctuaries, we and similar conservation concerns around the world are ensuring the survival of this species. More than 40 of these bats have been born at Dublin Zoo.
