World of Plants
How important are plants?
Plants are the basis of almost all life on this planet. They react in the presence of sunlight to make food, and give off oxygen as a by product. Although the largest quantity of oxygen comes from free floating algae in the sea, all you have to do is walk into any temperate forest in summer, and feel the difference - that's the tang of fresh oxygen and moisture in the air.
Plants are key players in the formations of entire ecosystems. The lush rainforest canopy of the Amazon jungle dictates the lifestyle, existence and co-dependency of all the species living within it. Likewise, the drought tolerant grasses of Africa and America provide grazing areas for a multitude of species, ensuring their survival in an arid climate. Over years the plants and animals become interdependent, animals need plants for food, shelter etc, plants often need animals for seed distribution, and even habitat creation.
In Dublin Zoo you will see how important our plants are for our animals and our visitors. Take some time to learn about the plants as you pass by - a great deal of care and thought has gone in to choosing the right plants and landscapes to complement specific habitats.
