Archaeopteryx

Archaeopteryx (Ark-ee-OP-ter-ix)

Age: 150 million years old

Body length: 0.5 metres

Wingspan: 0.6 metres

Weight: 0.8–1.0 kilograms

Diet: insects

Archaeopteryx is one of the first birds to have evolved. It still had many dinosaur-like features, with small teeth in its jaws and a long bony tail. Grasping claws on its forewings would have helped it clamber among tree branches.

Scientists argue whether it was more of a glider than a flier. But most now agree that it had the body and big brain needed to fly properly.
